Lunafly, made up of Sam Carter (25), Shin Taeho (Teo, 20) and Han Seungyun (Yun, 19), is an acoustic boy band that only made their debut in September 2012. With a strategy quite unlike other newly formed groups, Lunafly focused mainly on their music and how to bring it across to the international crowd – via YouTube and iTunes, doing both Korean and English versions of their own songs, as well as lots of covers of other popular English songs.
9th May 2012 marked their first visit to Singapore, where they held a meet & greet fan sign session at Causeway Point, performed at a local tv variety program, as well as a music showcase held at Hard Rock Cafe Singapore.
At the press conference, the trio shared with the media their music, their favourite girl group, their relationship with their parents, as well as their upcoming plans and where they would like to be in 5 years time.
From the songs that have been released, it was obvious that there is Western music influence in their music genre. This is not surprising as Sam, the leader of the trio, is of British-Korean mix, who grew up in London, listening to Beatles and the likes, citing Yesterday and Let It Be as his all time favourite.
Teo and Yun also grew up listening to American and English music. Teo was inspired to play the piano by Jamie Cullum, a jazz-pop singer songwriter, during his high school days while Yun, who wanted to be a soccer player initially, changed his mind when he was 15, after listening to John Mayer and Eric Clapton. From then on he wants to become a singer songwriter just like them.
Whilst they’ve each done solo covers, they find it too early to have their own original solo songs at this moment, as they feel they complement each other as a trio. They coiuldn’t decide on their favourite girl group, but were grateful to Hello Venus who have said they are fans of the band. They would also like to collaborate with 2NE1 if given a chance as they think 2NE1 have awesome voices.
The 3 of them have very different characters. Sam comes across as a very earnest, well-mannered and positive person; Teo is very straightforward, with a 4D sense of humour and very chatty while Yun is more quiet and shy when facing the media. Teo was requested by the host to pose the somewhat sexy look in their Fly To Love album but he was quick to decline as he had cut his hair short. He also mentioned that they are the same whether onstage or offstage.
When asked what they hope to see of themselves in 5 years time, Teo said that he hopes that they will still be as busy as now, performing and singing abroad and in Korea, receiving lots of love around the world. Yun hopes that Sam will continue to be a DJ, and Lunafly will become well known internationally and it is their dream to be able to hold a world tour. As for Sam, he hopes that they can continue writing good songs and give good performances.
They were also asked what they would do for Parents Day, practical guy Teo said that first of all he would send his parents money, and then give them a call. As for Sam, he has not seen his parents for almost 1 1/2 years so he calls them as often as he could. He says he never fails to get flowers for his mother on this special day when he’s with them. For Yun, he talks to his mother on the phone or message her everyday. Do the boys keep any secret from their parents? Sam confessed that he does not let his parents know about the hard part of being in this industry, not wanting them to worry. Teo said that he made another bank account and bankcard without his parents’ knowledge. For Yun, he says that his mum worries more when she does not know, so he chooses to tell her everything.
With that, the press conference ended with Lunafly promising to put up a great performance during the showcase, and they had even prepared a special present especially for the Singapore fans, just like how they would do for each country they go to.
