Sarang @ Orchard Central

It’s the weekend! What are you going to be doing this weekend besides being an extra on the set of Spy Myung Wol together with Eric, Han Ye Seul and Lee Jin Wook? Or stalking Lee Byung Hun (who’s here for Screen Singapore)? If you are planning to have a Korean meal to complete the whole ‘let’s-pretend-I-am-in-Korea’ experience, then I guess you will head to one of the many Korean restaurants that have opened in our little red dot. ^^ You might want to try out Sarang then.

For those of you who watched Rain’s concert recently or Pop Heal the World concert last Saturday, you would have noticed that Sarang is the official restaurant for both these concerts. Indeed, Sarang aims to be a K Pop centric restaurant, which started with K Pop Night in 2010.

Sarang is located on the 7th Floor of Orchard Central. It’s at a corner of the mall and the view outside the restaurant is rather nice especially at night.

It’s a mid sized restaurant and what caught my eyes was the rather long bar counter. Indeed, what captured my interest when I was first contacted to visit the place was the cocktail menu- using makgeolli & soju.

Orange Soju cocktail & Mojito Makgeolli Cocktail

Looks good? Well, the Orange Soju cocktail was average but the Mojito Makgeolli Cocktail was very refreshing especially with the mint. ^^ Not bad at all.

We checked out some of their more popular dishes and here’s my verdict….

Japchae

I love japchae. Not sure if it’s because of the sesame oil or the simplicity of this aromatic dish. I tried doing it at home once and failed miserably. The japchae at Sarang was tasty though I did find it had just a tad too much sesame oil.

Dak galbi

Dak galbi or marinated chicken is very popular with the Koreans and Singaporeans alike. What’s not to like about this dish? It’s tasty, it’s a little spicy and chicken is accepted by almost everyone so it’s a dish that can be shared amongst friends. A dish that can’t go wrong. Best to eat it together with rice and friends ^^

Drunken pork

I have to admit… I was a little apprehensive about this dish. I’m not fond of pork and I wasn’t sure about the drunken part. But it was surprising good. the pork was tender and did not have the porky taste that can occur with some dishes. Although I wouldn’t really call it drunken pork, I think it was more like tipsy pork. Hehehe! Whatever it is, it’s definitely worth a try.

Bibimbap

Bibimbap is a another very very cmmon dish. If you have watched enough Korean dramas/ movies, you would noticed that the Koreans seems to love having this cold and they have it anytime of the day (or night for that matter), by mixing any left over vegetablees that they may have left in the fridge. And for some strage reason, the bibimbap in the drama/ movie always seemed utterly, absolutely delicious. Unfortuntely, this dish was not very inspiring over at Sarang.

Kimchi Jjigae

This was sizzling hot when it arrived at our table and oooh.. it was heaven. It was chock-a-block of dumplings, pork, kimchi and I don’t know what. And very very tasty. Easily one of the beter kimchi jjiage that I’ve tried in a while.

Hotteok

Hotteok is fried dough filled with cinnamon. If you have read about my trip to Korea last year, you would have known that this is a very popular and common street food particularly in winter time. It’s sinful but oh so satisfying especially when you are facing the cold winter wind. The hotteok at Sarang was just as nice but because I was already so stuff with all the good food (see above), I just couldn’t finish this… morale of the story- always leave room for dessert.

Besides serving yummilicious food, Sarang also has a huge screen on its wall where it plays the latest K Pop mvs. And as April, on the last Wednesday of every month, DJ Funky T will work his magic fingers and spin those the songs for your whilst you eat.

DJ Funky T

DJ Funky T has been around for a while (having won numerous awards and competitions) and he is probably the first and maybe the only DJ here in Singapore to do live video mixing. This DJ has gone to places including China (his most memorable event so far) and Busan (which he described as challenging). Declaring the Singapore scene as hot and getting hotter, DJ Funky T also hosted Colored Rhythms’s K Klub party at the end of last year. He commented the crowd was crasy and had a fantastic time (he will also be hosting the coming Colored Rhythm’s K K’rave party on the 18th June).

So just what is live video mixing… hehe! It’s rather interesting actually… so much so that both my friend and I stopped eating and watched it for a full 10- 15 minutes.

Definitely adds to the whole dining experience. ^^

The food prices @ Sarang are affordable and I was told it tends to get a little crowded during the weekend. So do call ahead and reserve your table if you are going there in a big group.

Before I end this post, here’s 2 clips of Lee Joon (MBLAQ) amd Kim Joon (T-Max) at Sarang Restaurant recently. ^^ More reason to go there?
