Viu is rolling out a series of dramas in November, with some of them exclusive on their channel. From drama to thriller to comedy set in historical or modern time, there are a few that’s highly anticipated and all eyes will be on them. But you sometimes, those under the radar can throw up some surprises.
‘Melancholia’– 4th November 2021
Starring the rising actor, Lee Do Hyun and veteran Lim Soo Jung. The story line tells of a corrupt school system, a Mathematics genius and a caring teacher, with a hint of possibility of scandalous romance (based on the poster). Is this going to be a tear-jerker? Well, the title means ‘a deep sense of sadness’ according to Oxford dictionary, so I expect tissues will be in order. There is a difference of 16 years between the 2 leads so I will be interested to see how this plays out. But Lim Soo Jung looks as lovely as ever.
‘Secret Royal Inspector and Joy’– 9th November 2021
Taecyeon is a happy-go-lucky young man, who just wants a simple life as the boss of a dumpling shop. But he passed the state examinations and must reluctantly work as an undercover agent exposing corruption. Kim Hye Yoon, perhaps most well known for her role in ‘Sky Castle’. She will become the his love interest. Taecyeon has never failed in his comedy roles but he impressed me in ‘Vincenzo’ as the villain. I hope this drama will be able let him showcase more of his acting skills as he is clearly capable of doing more than just being the clown.
‘Now We Are Breaking Up’– 12th November 2021
This is a Viu exclusive. After ‘Encounter’, Song Hye Gyo will be starring in a drama with yet another younger man- Jang Yi Young. But somehow, the difference of 12 years do not seemed as pronounced in the released shots so far. Perhaps Park Bo Gum has a more baby face? This was Jang Ki Young’s last drama before enlisting the army. It was reported that they filmed all the promotional materials before went into the army. Song Hye Gyo has often acted in melodramas but I think she was the best when she can display her comedic skills, like ‘Full House’ and ‘Descendants of the Sun’. Still, I hope this drama will be good because I like Jang Ki Young.
‘One Ordinary Day’– 26th November 2021
A remake on the incredibly brilliant English drama, ‘Criminal Justice’, Kim Soo Hyun stars as an ordinary young man, who finds himself accused of a murder on one ordinary day. He must depend on Cha Seung Won, a 3rd rate lawyer, to help him prove his innocence. In the original series, it was a young female barrister. After ‘Psycho But it’s Okay’, Kim Soo Hyun will be in another emotional draining drama. Can’t he just act in an light-hearted drama? Perhaps a ‘Hotel del Luna’ season 2? And can you believe that he is 33 years old?!
Cha Seung Won may not be your idol oppa, but he is one great solid acting oppa.
