BLUSH- the Pan-Asian Girl Group

Blush is a Pan-Asian girl group. In fact, the press release said it’s the first Pan-Asian girl group. What this basically means is that all the 5 girls are of different Asian nationalities. To be specific- Chinese (Hong Kong), Indian, Japanese, Korean and Filipino. It’s as diverse as it gets.

The five girls were chosen from a massive talent hunt called Lotus Project, spanning 5 countries, about 6 months and selected from over 3,500 participants. Formed early this year, it’s not the first visit for the group. They were here earlier in May. But this time, they are back in Singapore to promote their second single- Dance On.

So who are the 5 girls?

Victoria Chan – Chinese (Hong Kong)
Natsuko Danjo – Japanese
Angeli Flores – Filipino
Lee Ji Hae – Korean
Alisha Budhrani – Indian

Are they any good? To be frank, I had zero expectation when I first received the press release. There are way too many girl bands (and boy bands too) who sound, sing and dress the same. But to be very, very frank, I was pleasantly surprised when I clicked on their mv video for ‘Undivided’. They sounded good (ok, I guess there was technical help). But what drew me was – this isn’t a cookie-and-cut girl group. I guess what I really meant was that, they are not your typical Korean girl group (which is probably a good thing seeing as Korea is rolling them out like them out like cookies). And yet, they remind me of 2NE1 and Brown Eyed Girls, both of whom are well much loved and respected.

And the group has achieved much within the very short period of time since their debut. They were the opening act for Justin Bieber in Hong Kong, they made their debut in the US on the hit show, ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and this month, they will open the act for Black Eyed Peas in Manila, The Philippines. Their first single also reached No 3 on the Billboard Dance/Club Chart. Apparently, they are the first Asian girl group to do so. Now that’s pretty impressive.

They will be doing a few performances for the next few days so do go and check them out if you can.
